What is forecasting?

Forecasting is a systematic effort aimed at anticipating future events or conditions, identifying major development challenges and preparing qualified responses facilitating achievement of strategic goals. Forecasting is both science and art. Forecasting methods enable for coping with unknown future situations, reducing uncertainty and managing risks of the future developments in society, economy, and science and technology.

 The Institute for Forecasting of the Slovak Academy of Sciences established on January 1, 1989 concentrates on interdisciplinary research in following areas:

  1. theoretical, methodological and conceptual issues of the Slovak society in national and world-wide context
  2. human dimension of global environmental change
  3. co-evolution of institutional and technology change.
