Nikoleta Slavíková, PhD candidate of the joint programme of the Institute for Forecasting of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Public Policy of the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences of Comenius University, has successfully defended her dissertation on "Labour migration of Roma people: how it is influenced by the family".
Under the supervision of Lucia Mýtna Kureková, Slavíková conducted extensive field research with professionals working in Roma communities, as well as with Roma families with migration experience in eastern and southern Slovakia. The work significantly helps to de-mythicize the Roma minority and provides an inquiry into labour migration decision-making in the context of limited employment opportunities, barriers to access to education and discrimination in Slovakia. Nikoleta's research presents Roma men and women as active agents whose decisions respond to difficult socio-economic conditions as well as structural barriers to full inclusion in the domestic labour market and society. In the southern part of Slovakia, her research identifies Roma women as migrants, and interprets labour migration as an emancipatory tool that also highlights a shift in the stereotypical perception of gender roles in Roma families.
The members of the commission were prof. Lucia Mokrá (Dean of the FSES CU), doc. Katarína Staroňová (Institute of Public Policy, FSES CU), dr. Miloslav Bahna (Institute of Sociology SAS), and doc. Vladimír Baláž (Institute for Forecasting CSPS SAS).
We warmly congratulate Nikoleta on her well-deserved PhD degree!
